S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report
The current year will have finally closed on 12th. December 02 when the Annual General Meeting will be held at the Institute Building, Caernarfon, and all eyes will then be focused on the new season, which will be upon us before we turn. Is it the mild autumn and early winter, which makes the weeks, go flying past? Some tell me that’s how time does go as one gets older – I won’t dwell on that one.
During the past season, there were certainly some disappointments but these were outweighed considerably by the successes like the return of the sewin shoals into the bottom pools on the Seiont, the funding allowed from the Gwynedd Council Cwlwm Gwledig Plan and European Objective 1 for the conversion of Melin y Cim, Pontllyfni into anglers accommodation, funding from Cist Gwynedd and the Wales Council for Voluntary Action for the construction of a new track and boat mooring facilities at Llyn Nantlle, this will be provide excellent and easy access to the lake. With the completion of this facility excellent access to our boats can now be enjoyed on Padarn, Cwellyn, Dywarchen and Nantlle.
During November there were tremendous runs of salmon on both Seiont and Llyfni, I have recorded fish below the Nant Peris Fish Pass on Saturday 2nd. November, which is earliest yet. There is no doubt at all that the work on the actual pass itself is proving benificial as on the same afternoon I saw two small salmon lying under Pont Meibion, Nant Peris. The first I’ve seen here since the late 80’s. Excellent signs of the continuing improvements, however things must be kept in perspective as nature does take some time to recover completely. This is the plea I’d make to the Environment Agency – embark on a structured stocking policy to kick start many a system including the Seiont and Gwyrfai which have been shabbily treated by man, in the name of benefit to the country being Power Generation and water abstraction, now is the time for the river to receive the benefits which the hand of man can provide – In the medium term at least.
Returning to our continuing programme of improving the clubs infrastructure, early December 02 will have seen our planning application for an Anglers Centre being considered by the local council planning committee. If successful and funding can be obtained for the building work, then we will the be in the envious position of being able to offer a purpose built training and meeting place for anglers, It’ll be a hard task I would think to get tem out from informs of the log fire onto the river bank. This is a challenge we look forward to with relish.
Prospects – Looking forward to 3rd. March 03. and the opening of our rivers.
