S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

Another era closed on 15th February 02. With the retirement of our Chairman for the past 21years. Mr Maurice M. Jones, Penllyn. All with a presentation dinner at Y Bistro, Llanberis enjoyed a first class evening where Mr Jones was presented with a Salmo the Leaper figurine by Colin Welsh, by incoming Chairman Dr. R. Parry, Llanberis.

During his tenure of the chair Maurice has guided the society through it’s most successful years when the purchasing of fishing rights in the locality became a priority, it’s no mean feat to be able to say that the society is probably the most asset rich club in the country. The development work has also proceeded, recently much has been possible with the partnerships formed in this work with Gwynedd Council, Environment Agency, Snowdonia National Park, Countryside Commission for Wales, to name but a few.

There have also been frustrations as well over the years, especially the problems which were caused by the eutrophication of Padarn Lake and resultant damage to both salmon and sewin in the Seiont. Thankfully this problem has now been surmounted thanks to the dogged persistence of the ACA. Things now really are on the mend.

In the Llyfni we have perhaps the most productive sewin fishery in the country, its future is now assured in the Premier League thanks to the work now being carried on under European Objective 1 Funding and the Tir Gofal Scheme. Work to ease access and mooring facilities on Llyn Nantlle will hopefully be commenced this season.

On a personal note I must thank Maurice for the guidance he has given me, especially his ability to curb at times my over enthusiasm- well that’s what I call it, quite e few would disagree. I’m certain that Dr. Parry point me in the same direction. I certainly look forward to working alongside him. As the years ahead will no doubt bear the fruit that Maurice has sown.

By the time this article is read, the season will have been underway on the rivers for nearly a month, at the time of writing there is much anticipation, rivers are high, but we’ve again avoided the extremes of weather experienced in other parts of the country. The Gulf Stream, which touches us in this part of the county, certainly makes this one of the more favoured areas to live weather wise in the country.

On the Char rearing project, which I’ve touched upon before, well on the 15th February the alevins started hatching, by the 18th all 3,000 had successfully hatched. All are doing well; I’m given to understand that this is the only project of its kind being undertaken in the country.

I hope that by next month I’ll be able to report on several schemes that are in the pipeline, especially the progress of the Melin y Cim project. And our ideas for our Objective 1 phase 2 application.
