S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

At the end of May, the weather remains seasonally cold with high river levels and the ever - present north westerlys are not conducive to good fishing. However some hardier than myself have been out and from what I hear fishing has been unexpectedly good in patches. Frank B. Jones, ventured to Llyn Cwm Dwythwch, which lies in a desolate but beautiful location above the village of Llanberis, this is a very productive lake, known to harbour some nice specimen brownies. These are very shy, and sometimes encountered at dusk; Not very many of the bigger ones are caught, until Frank landed a beauty at over two and a half pounds.

On the Llyfni, John Fraser Williams managed a good brace of sewin at 2lbs each. one afternoon on a 14 gold-headed pheasant tail. Clifford Thomas, Felinheli, has been out nearly every day, he reported a lot of small browns and good numbers of smolts in the system, but the large browns are somewhat reluctant to make their presence felt as yet. Too cold perhaps.

Llyn Padarn continues to fish very well, with the charr again showing a decrease in size, this is again excellent news, which tends to support the theory that the system is now improving rapidly.

It’s been a hard slog to implement all the actions which are now coming together for the benefit of the fishery, however as soon as one problem is and another rears it’s head. The latest is Ffos y Dail that used to be a very productive sewin spawning tributary on the middle Seiont. The effect of land use and a landfill operation has now rendered this river fishless. This problem was reported to the E.A. some time ago, thankful action is now being taken, hopefully in the next few months the impacting operators will have been made to clean up their act and a sewin smolt release project implemented by next season.

Fencing work ar the result of European funding is progressing well, excellent work is being carried out at Nant Peris on the Seiont, and at Tan ’Rallt and Drws y Coed on the Llyfni. It would do some to take the effort to visit these areas to appreciate what’s going on! Surveys will commence on the Gwyrfai in 2003.

More excellent news is that the club has obtained planning permission for the construction of a new track and boat mooring jetty at Llyn Nantlle. Also 80% of the cost has been awarded through Cist Gwynedd courtesy of Gwynedd Council. This is a facility which disabled and able bodied alike will gain great benefit. Many thanks to all who have contributed to making this project now a reality.

Whilst on Nantlle, its good to note that the fishing here has been fantastic for brownies, boat can be arranged through Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu 01766 890 321

Electric Engines are also available for hire.

A lot of interest is being shown in charr fishing, this can be really good on Padarn from early July onwards, a boat is a necessity, we are currently preparing a section on the club web site on  the where and how of  participating in this delightful pastime in the locality.

On 9th. May an interesting and really excellent evening was enjoyed at the Dolbadarn Hotel , Llanberis in the company of Peter Gray. Kielder Hatchery. No doubt the presentation will result in same challenging debates.

Prospects.

July will see sewin fishing in full swing, usual flies, Teal Blue & Silver, Mallard & Claret, Kate Mc.Claren, Medicine, Black Pennell are all good. During the day try small nymphs, especially on the Llyfni.

Grilse will run on the slightest rise in levels, try the lower Seiont, Glanrafon area on the Llyfni and Gwredog on the Gwyrfai. The latter is excellent for large sewin with worm during high water levels. If Dwr Cymru decide to let any out of Llyn Cwellyn that is.
