S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

Fishing has certainly improved by recent rain, however we do need two good floods to entice fish to run in appreciable numbers, however it’s heartening to report that the Seiont continues to improve and after many lean years, in fact some big fish have been slowly moving through the system since mid May.

Clifford Thomas, Felinheli had eight sewin at about 1.8 lbs in two nights, John F. Williams, Caernarfon had one at 3lbs during the same two nights from Crawia. The reports also indicate that there are large numbers of Sewin of just under 1lb throughout the system, good news indeed. There are no reports of any salmon as yet, although there are quite a number present and showing themselves before low water. These could be fish destined for the Seiont, Ogwen, Conwy, Clwyd/Elwy or the Welsh Dee.

On the Llyfni fishing is slow by normal standards, however four salmon have been reported to me, this generally means that quite a few more will have actually been landed. Large runs of sewin usually start running this river in late July early August, which this year the E.A decided was the time to open the river mouth for land drainage purposes, I just couldn’t believe what I saw when I visited the area, in fact the prolific sea pool And the next pool up in the system have been completely done away with.

The lakes continue to fish well, Dywarchen after a slow start, due mainly to stocking problems, which are now over is fishing very well, the main stock is in the 1.8 –2lbs with some big fish included, the next heavy stocking will have been ain mid August, which should ensure good fishing to the seasons end.

Llyn Cwellyn is turning out to be a real winner, thanks to the fishing packages offered through the Cwellyn Arms Hotel, Rhyd Ddu, check Cwellyn Arms mailto:SNOWDONINN@aol.com for details, example package is two days camping with fishing including boat and electric engine hire is £64. There are other excellent deals with accommodation in the pub, which has one of the best offering of real ales in the country. The food is very good also; perhaps I’ll get a pint for this plug. Graham the owner has really managed to put fishing and Llyn Cwellyn on the map, which is good for the angling society as well. Llyn Nantlle packages can also be arranged and with the access and mooring facilities now completed this is a good opportunity to try same boat fishing for salmon and sewin. Well worth a try, as there are so few opportunities to practice this type of fishing in either England or Wales.

Llyn Padarn is producing good fishing, with charr being prolific this year, A. Roberts, Rhuddlan and N.Closs Parry. Fachwen are putting in the hours and are getting some really nice fish, Arwel had a lovely 2lb wild brown a few days ago. If one of the hoteliers in the Llanberis area took an interest in fishing and fisher folk, then they could have a very lucrative avenue to explore, I’ve mentioned one already in this report on another water, so come on Llanberis Hoteliers how about working together for the benefit of all.

Prospects look very good for the remainder of the season, with both salmon and sewin, with the charr fishing well worth a try especially during September and try the top end of Padarn.
