Uilleann / Irish Pipes

Uilleann or Irish Pipes, as we know them today, were developed in the late 18th century. They are bellows-blown, indoor instruments with a chanter and three regulators: tenor, baritone & bass (which can be described as closed chanters fitted with keys which sound when pressed.) Played with the wrist or fingers of the right hand, they provide the accomplished player with a melodic or rhythmical accompaniment.
These pipes are made in the pitches of: D C# C B# The most popular pitch being D which is the key most favoured today and is compatable with most other modern instruments. If you are playing for the first time it is recommended that you start with a practice set which consists of Bag Bellows and Chanter. This is known as a practice set.

This can be upgraded into a half set by adding drones.

The drones have a switch which enable them to be switched off. This enables the chanter to be played on its own.

A Full Set Of Pipes

This consists of three regulators which are added to the Half set and as with the drones they are Bass, Baritone and Tenor.
