S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

Here we are at the beginning of September and still awaiting rain, all the recent wet weather of the last few weeks have largely passed us by, the only rise was towards the third week in August when the rivers rose by some 4ins. This was still below the spinning level. On the Seiont all that’s been reported are two salmon of 6lbs, Clifford Thomas, Portdinorwic landed the first on fly from Llyn Harri Parry, the other fell to Gareth Jones, Bontnewydd from Pont Rug. This is nothing to be concerned about as the Seiont is a late river with fishing available until the end of October. Last season the main runs started during the second week of September and within a period of three weeks over 100 salmon were landed, this is good fishing by any standard. If the numbers of salmon and sewin, which show themselves in the Menai Straits, are anything to go by, then we should have excellent runs, if we get water that is.

Over on the Llyfni, fishing has bee excellent at times, however on this river I wonder whether I should report what’s going on, as last month I was pilloried in the T&S letters column, obviously there are some who do not like to hear the truth, all I report on are based on fact, not rumours, in the case of fish returning downstream this is not a figment of my imagination, they are based on the fish counter readings. Although I hold the position of secretary to the Seiont Gwyrfai and Llyfni Anglers Society, the views I express in this column are not necessarily those of the Society it is therefore unfair that hardworking club committee members are criticised by someone who chooses not to disclose his identity. At least if I want to be controversial everyone knows who I am, and I stand by what I say, why didn’t the editor publish the name of the author? There won’t be an answer on this score I bet.

Back to fishing the largest salmon on the Llyfni to date stands at 12lbs to W.B. Williams of Talysarn, The place to be is of course an hour or so before and after high water on the Pontllyfni stretch, the number of sewin here at times has been staggering, Dave Jones, Caernarfon, who’s had a number of nice sewin and one grilse if 5 lbs informed me that on one afternoon he stopped counting a shoal after reaching 350 fish. Perhaps ‘Diawl Bach’ will wish to dispute this?

The lakes continue to fish well, with Dywarchen now coming into it’s own as the weather cools down, there during the last week in August, the lake was alive with fish movements and bags of three rainbows at over 9lbs weight was common. Dave Bulman of Gwalchmai has reported the heaviest rainbow so far at just under 6lbs.

Thank to all the member who’ve been busy on the Crawia stretch of the Seiont, this beat must be one of the best kept in the whole of the county. Keep up the good work.

24th September sees the opening of the new facilities at Llyn Cwellyn. Thanks to all who’ve contributed to the project, especially Snowdonia National Park, Environment Agency, Forest Enterprise, Sports Council For Wales and all the members who assisted. Boat booking and accommodation can be arranged vie Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu on 01766 890321.
