S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

A month of good water, and at last the large sewin have started running the Seiont, during the last week in May I observed some large individual fish moving into Llyn Doctor, unfortunately I remain blank. There is reluctance certainly on all our three rivers by all anglers to venture out and seriously seek any form of migratory species just in case they land a salmon; one can easily guess the reason why. So really it will be after 16th. June when a true reflection of stocks can be gauged.

Llyn Nantlle has fished exceptionally well for brownies, with some small sewin being landed also, this bodes well for when the weather eventually settles down and warms up properly. Work to complete the jetty can hopefully begin during the second week in June. This will then make four boats available.

On 4th. June some 10,000 sewin fry were planted out by E.A. staff into the Peris at the top end of Llanberis Pass and the Hwch below Llyn Dwythwch, these have been looked after at the E.A’s Dolgellau Hatchery, a similar amount of salmon fry will be also returned to the Seiont within the next few weeks. This will now be an annual occurrence, which will hopefully reverse the trend of the prolific late running salmon and sewin in the Seiont system.

Over the past six years there has been an experimental extension to the salmon season from 17th. to 31st. October. It is now proposed that these new dates will be accepted as part of the new E.A. Fishery Byelaws, which are now in draft form. One thing we have learnt from this trial extension is that a lot more anglers now enjoy fly-fishing for salmon but most importantly the new closing date still does not reflect to the actual  timing of migratory runs into the Seiont. Last year there were tremendous runs through both November and December, these should be capitalised on in the same form as the as the previous trials; i.e. catch and release.

Whilst on this subject, I ponder on the fact that the new byelaws and any possible further trial extension will limit fishing downstream of Pontrhythallt Bridge to the sea.

Now there is I believe no close season for coarse fish, some bright sparks have illegally stocked the Penllyn area with roach, this is the main salmon and sewin spawning beds on the system, will the E.A legislate here or will fishing for coarse fish be allowed, will this I wonder be to the detriment of our improving river.

The club has been allocated funding to hold a series of fishing coaching events on our waters, this exercise will take place over a period of five weeks during the school holidays. From the numbers attending over previous years, it’s imperative that those wishing to take part do pre –book their places, this in order that our coaches can give individuals the necessary attention. There is no charge for instruction, to reserve a place contact me on mailto:huw.hughes@lineone.net Further details can also be obtained on http://www.hgt.gwynedd.gov.uk/sg/Default.htm

Prospects for July are excellent with good number of sewin entering both Seiont and Llyfni. Nantlle should be given a go for sewin, try the a Blue Elver on the bob. Charr fishing on Padarn will also be in full swing. All in all it looks like being a good summer, weather permitting of course.
