Excellent news again in the form of more money for fishery development in Wales. The National Assembly is to give an additional £800k to the Environment Agency Wales annually for the next three years to fund the recommendations of the Fisheries Legislative Review, as a result of utilising part of this money it has been able to obtain an additional £2.2 m in European Objective 1 funding again for fishery development. This is in further addition to the £400k, which has already been awarded to the Gwynedd Fisheries Project for Habitat Improvement. Only two short years ago one could never have comprehended that this kind of money would have been available to spend on our waters.

The good news doesn’t stop here either, what about the excellent news from Ireland that at last agreements are in hand to curtail the use of the devastating curtain of nets which operate on the West Coast. These no doubt is together with habitat degradation are the primary cause of the decrease in salmon runs here in Wales.

Congratulations to all that have worked to tirelessly on the money and net reduction front. Also mention must be made to the Assembly for Wales who commissioned the Nautilus Report on Welsh Fisheries, this pointed the way forward and the Assembly grasped the opportunity with both hands.

I also hope to be able to release details in the near future of projects, which we as a club have submitted for consideration, these will further enhance our waters.

Much interest is being shown in our Lake Padarn Char project, of which 3,000 ova have already eyed at our Crawia Hatchery. I believe this is the only project of its kind in both Wales and England. I noted that from Jon Beer’ article in last months issue that he’s interested in this terrific fish, however we were disappointed that he hadn’t sampled the delights of Llyn Padarn and Cwellyn, perhaps the fishing here is to challenging for him or perhaps the scenery to awe-inspiring that he wouldn’t be able to concentrate on his fishing – such is life I suppose.

All river are bank high, some snow showers on Snowdon, with the rivers opening on 3rd. March things look very promising. 20th. March sees Padarn and |Cwellyn kicking off, Padarn fishes very well this early and boat fishing with floating line towards the middle part of the day can be very rewarding.
