S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report
It’s four weeks now without any appreciable rain, a few showers is no good at all here, except for gardeners of course as the Seiont takes at least eight hours rain to start to rise. The Seiont is the river where most of the early trout fishing takes place, so this year has been a washout so far.
The Gwyrfai now that Cwellyn is used for water supply, it will take at least 24 hours rain for even the smallest rise to appear. On the other hand the Llyfni, which is a classic spate river a few hours will do the trick, here there is a chance of encountering a salmon if a there is a flood towards the end of April. The Pontllyfni counter holds witness to the fact that some large fish enter the river during late April early May, however due to bylaw restrictions nobody now wets a line until after 16th. June.
Not because there’s disagreement with catch and release but as the river is fished mainly for salmon with a worm, then that’s enough an answer in itself.
Llyn Padarn has fished very well since it’s opening on 20th March, both bait and fly are practised here extensively, and both are proving successful. The brownies are in superb condition, with charr also appearing in some bags, these are decreasing in size, which is excellent news and goes some way to prove that the phosphate stripping plant at Llanberis STW is doing it’s work.
Llyn Dywarchen opened on 1st April. What a day, high winds with water spouts travelling up an down the lake, some hardy souls made the effort and were rewarded with full bags, members limits here are 3 fish daily, whilst day permit holders have a limit of 4. Fishing, boat permits; tackle hire and accommodation can be obtained at the Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu. See Snowdonia Inn or check our site Cymdeithas Pysgota Seiont, Gwyrfai & Llyfni Fishing Society
Visitors to the Seiont will see an vast improvement in facilities this season, extensive bank clearing has taken place from Crawia to Glan Gwna with new footbridges and riverside benches also erected, those who visit the Stablau beat will find new footbridges over the drainage ditches which have for so long cause problems.
Very many thanks to the team who has and is continuing to work so hard on these projects, if you find a male name which rhymes with ‘Foreman’ then you’ll know the man in charge.
Prospects all depends on rain, the forecast today promises at least another week of sun, I’ll have the garden in order at least. By the beginning of May all the lakes should be fishing well, the boats have had overhauls, and are all on the waters. Another effective team of two here has done tremendous work, Again very many thanks for all you’re commitments and hard work.
