S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

Fishing on all three rivers is low key at the moment (early May) the early season flurry is over, and all that can be caught for the next three weeks or so are migrating smolts, again from what I see, these are in plentiful supply again this year and if hooked should be shaken off without handling. This is the third year of increasing numbers. This season will hopefully show a marked increase in the sewin runs. News from Caernarfon Bay and the Menai Straits indicate that, and unfortunately large numbers are now turning up in the bass drift nets. Lets hope that long overdue action will be taken against those who blatantly flout the regulations.

The North Western Sea Fisheries Committee could take action, to limit the areas and time where these nets operate, so that fishing is prohibited when sewin and Salmon enter the Straits in numbers. The salmon commercial nets have been removed from the area completely as the result of a Net Limitation Order, due to the area hosting runs of fish from many river systems. Why on earth does the Sea Fisheries Committee not take a similar view?

Work has commenced on habitat restoration on both upper Seiont and Llyfni; this is as result of funding obtained through the European Objective 1 programme. Survey work on the Gwyrfai will commence shortly. On the Seiont, the new fish pass installed at Nant Peris by First Hydro is to be the subject of further work again in the next month or so, many thanks to the company for their commitment to this project. It’s taken a long time, but we are getting there.

The Melin y Cim project has finally been submitted for consideration for funding, this is another Objective 1 and Gwynedd Council Cwlwm Gwledig application, which will hopefully see an important local building which has been lying empty for some 40 years being brought back to use. It’s in such a beautiful location on the banks of the Llyfni; in fact one can fish from the patio.

The main fishing action now is on Padarn and Dywarchen, regular stocking has now commenced at the later location, and as usual it’s proving to be popular. From the beginning of May, electric engines will be available for hire from Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu, these are also popular especially for Nantlle and Cwellyn, and pre booking is advisable.

After a lengthy process the fishing on the Llyn Du area of the lower Seiont, looks to be secure again for quite some time, this will now enable the society to negotiate a lease on the Caernarfon Park Lake, a new venture hopefully can be cantered here, being the creating of a coarse fishery. This should complement well our other fishing opportunities, and also tidy up and bring back into regular use a part of the town, which is causing concern to all. No doubt there will be the usual objectors. One good thing about all this, the members of the club who wish to see things moving ahead now by now where the opposition is going to come from both outside and also within. Fore warned is fore armed or so they say. More on this next month.

Prospects.

All water should be fishing well from early June, the upper lakes such as Cwellyn, Dwythwch, Cwm Silyn and Dywarchen will have warmed up with the floating line being tops. Hopefully early Sewin will be in Nantlle, don’t forget to book if you want a boat and electric engine.

Sewin will be in all rivers, with especially the Pontllyfni area of the Llyfni, especially on hour or so before and after high tide.

Try also for grilse if we get good water on both Llyfni and Seiont, last season those who concentrated on the lower Seiont – Caeau ‘Rafon to Llyn Du were rewarded with very nice fish.
