S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

Things are moving ahead very nicely indeed on the development front, with the purchase of extensive fishing rights now almost complete work is in hand to provide easy access to this area of the lake, the Forestry Enterprise which are to be thanked for co-operating in this venture have given the go ahead for new boat moorings to be constructed. Of course application will have to be made to Parc Eryri for this venture which will make boat access a reality to the many disabled anglers who will find even being on this lake a delight in it's self. Anyone with a few thousand pounds to spare?

The work to complete the access facilities to Penllyn on the Seiont is also nearing completion, however the present work does not include the repairing of the boat jetties and moorings, hopefully we can complete this work when we can find 28 feet of 5" square greenheart.

At Nant Peris, Environment Agency staff have completed the livestock drinking stations and we hope that by the time this report is read that the fencing off of the remaining length of the Afon Afr and the part of the Peris leading to the Llyn Peris Diversion Tunnel will have been completed, this is essential in order that the bank side vegetation gets a good growth established before autumn sets in.

The final bit of news on this front is that planning permission has also been obtained to convert Melin y Cim, which is an old corn mill situated on the bank of the Llyfni, into top class holiday accommodation, you can actually fish for sewin from the patio, we also hope to arrange small groups for fishing instruction and other wildlife associated activities based at this location.

Whilst having just touched on fishing instruction, there is no doubt whatsoever that there is a great demand by the public at large to take up fishing, the only obstacle is the time it takes to put things together, the fishing structure here in Wales is all voluntary and with all the other things which are going on as can be seen above it becomes very difficult to arrange instruction with any degree of continuity. Well here in Wales, the Sports Council through the Lottery scheme which is administered by Gwynedd Council has hit upon a winner in as far as fishing is concerned; as one onlooker said to me during the second session, if this is one scheme in which public money is well spent this has to be it, look at the look on the faces of those kids, both of young and not so young of age. The first session at the Caernarfon Rugby Club saw 53 in attendance, the second at Llyn y Dywarchen, on a dreadful day of wind and rain saw 48 present, and we couldn't get them to come off the water. The instructor Derek Turner APGI of Bodelwyddan is to be congratulated, he is indeed a professional with a very high standard; he is very much appreciated by all. The final session will have been on 17th. June on the River Seiont at Crawia when salmon fishing was on the agenda.

To those in government responsible for promoting the nations health, I would suggest next year if we are allowed funding to hold like instructions, send someone along, it

Might just convince you that the Fisheries Review recommendations that fishing and fisheries funding might be worth considering in the same light as opera and ballet.

The background work is place and running smoothly, all we need now is a good run of salmon and sewin, the Llyfni has started to produce sea trout, the heaviest so far is 4lbs, but the really productive beat which is from Pontllyfni road bridge to the sea does not open for fishing until 1st. June. Then things should really start to move.

On the Seiont trout fishing has been fairly good and all the salmon smolts have left the release pond, but now even at the end of May it's still very cold making the brown trout fishing slow, however one thing which has been commented on by all who've been on the river is the amount of small fish which are about, this is really a good sign for the future, one can only imagine the damage that the Llanberis sewage plant and it's phosphate discharges had on the system, when its take about ten years for us to see the small fish population return nearly its pre eutrophication days. Not a penny has been paid by those responsible to help with helping us rejuvenate the river. Although the now installed and working phosphate stripping plant is improving things steadily, the judgement given at Caernarfon County Court in 1995 which decreed that due to an anomaly the Water Company not be held responsible for the damage to the river system confirmed my belief that in many respects the law is indeed as ass.

Prospects for next month.

I promise to concentrate on the fishing side of things, but there's so much going on and there's so much interest in our development work, however put that to one side, the sewin fishing should be at its best, Nantlle lake if last years counter numbers anything to go by should be fishing well. Seiont should be worth a go for salmon if there's been good water and the Charr on both Padarn and Cwellyn should be coming into play.
