S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report

At last heavy rain came on the third week in August, however after such a prolonged dry spell all river were carrying all sorts of debris, and it wasn’t until the 21st that fish were recorded, this is the earliest that grilse have been caught for at least seven years, could it be perhaps that some sort of recovery in catches is under way, we sincerely hope so, those who were into fish were father and son Clifford and John Thomas, Felinheli with son again getting the better of father by 5 to 4lbs. Although Clifford holds the upper hand on the sewin front with several nice fish with his best at 4lb 8oz from Glanrafon Bach on ay windy and stormy night when everyone else had retreated.

Martin Williams, Rhiwlas grilse 6lb from Glan Gwna, Bob Michael, Newton Abbott 6lb grilse from Crawia and four sewin to 2lbs from Glan Gwna, John Frazer Williams 4lb grilse from Crawia, Stephen Carr 6lbs grilse, Pontrhythallt.

Sewin on the Llyfni has not been so productive, however weight average is greatly increased. Things seem to be getting much later, it’s interesting to read about runs starting to revert to earlier running fish, in this pert of the country it’s getting later, this is also true with sewin, it been the middle of August and the small sewin are starting to colonise the bottom pools, a full six weeks later than normal.

Dywarchen after it’s August stocking produced excellent fishing, not with the recently stocked but with large rainbow triploids from previous months introduction which have showed no inclination to show interest in any fly until the weather cooled down, don’t fish to light here or you’ll only get broken.

Boat fishing on Nantlle and Cwellyn has really proved popular this season, it’s wise to book in advance at the Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu, book a room as well because after a days fishing and having a pint of the many really excellent real ales on offer by mine host Graham, in front of the log fire one is really not inclined to move anywhere, two pints and you can’t move in any case. This has to be one of the great little fishing Inns in Wales and well worth the visit.

The Melin y Cim conversion is going well after all sorts of complications, we can positively say that it will be available for bookings for 2005.

Prospects, as the season on the Seiont is extended to 31st October if there’s water then salmon fishing should be very good, fly only from 17th –31st.
