S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report
Another four week have passed without any rain, the two week fly only extension to 31st October on the Seiont went by with very low water conditions, with hardly any fishermen to be seen, from all accounts the only fish landed during this period was one of about 10 lbs to Dave Spencer, Llandudno Llyn Engan being the location.
At the beginning of November salmon are pushing upstream with a very good head of fish to be seen in all pools, these are silver fish, and although now the E.A rod and line bye laws are to be advertised with the extension period formally being incorporated into the season, there is a need for the Agency to listen to what fishery owners tell them, we have the experience and would not propose anything which would prove detrimental to our waters and therefore to our very existence. The point I’m getting at is that certainly on the Seiont we should be looking at another two-week extension, taking the season to the middle of November.
I do know that some in authority will suggest that we are irresponsible, but I think not, the Seiont is the only true Autumn river in North Wales, whilst on the other hand the Llyfni, which is less that half the size of the Seiont produces early and summer fish. Last year salmon were netted for ova on 23rd. December. They had to be kept at the EA hatchery and were not ripe until mid January. I think I shall rest my case on those facts.
Over the last three years it the Melin y Cim project has been touched upon in this column, well at last work is to start during November and scheduled for completion by mid August 2004, who will he first to stay here I wonder. Responsible for funding this project are Gwynedd Council thought its Welsh Assembly Government Cwlwm Gwledig scheme, European Objective 1 funding through WEFO. Aggregate Levy Fund (Wales) Countryside Council for Wales and of course the Society itself.
It has been a long and arduous project, and without the assistance of the Gwynedd Council Regeneration Officers it would have very difficult indeed to have been able to manoeuvre through the bureaucratic maze that surrounds such projects. The message is lessen the bureaucracy and it will encourage more groups like ours to draw out quality applications.
The societies AGM will take place at the Institute Buildings; Caernarfon at 7pm Thursday 11th December, there will be some interesting topics for discussion.
