S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report
It
really has been a tremendous end to 2004, and at the beginning January 2005
despite what I would guess to be a record spawning season, salmon are still entering
the system, and these in addition to those still waiting to spawn will make it
a certainty that there will be kelts galore when the season opens for trout on
3rd. March. So be careful is the message.
On Monday 3rd. January I counted 17 salmon, some very large
specimens included in the holding pool at the top end of the Llyn Peris
diversion tunnel, certainly about 50% of these were clean and yet to spawn.
During the same day on the lower Seiont, in addition 15 were observed
underneath Pontrug Bridge and a few days earlier a dozen salmon were seen
entering Llyn Padarn at Penllyn. In addition there were some who had been
given new tackle as Christmas presents and blissfully unaware of any close
season fishing away with worms off the bridge at Penllyn, to their surprise I
was the only one of many who had spoken to them that day to challenge them,
during the same period we also came across a net halfway across the river at
Caeau ‘Rafon. And I thought that we’d been assured by the EA that
Bailiffing was now being carried out diligently and efficiently during the
crucial spawning period.
The
weather, thankfully has been mild up to the beginning of January which has
enabled the few to carry on with their extensive bank clearing, more work will
hopefully have been started in the next few weeks on the lower end of both
Seiont and Llyfni, volunteers require, contact me if interested.
