S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report
As we move into August we are still waiting for prolonged rain, the majority of the rain that the remainder of the country has been experiencing has for the most part sadly passed us by. Heavy occasional showers only managed to raise levels about 10ins, which was not enough considering that levels were at rock bottom anyway.
Some sewin moved up but very few settled in any of the pools, Crawia area has produced only the occasional fish, J.F. Williams, Caernarfon and J. Thomas, Felinheli each had lovely specimens as about 4lbs each, C. Thomas. Felinheli is scraping a few together mostly at about 1.8lbs. Due to the scarcity of fish, angling pressure remains light, and this situation is likely to persist until we get a good flood. During the afternoon of Friday 30th July during an ebbing tide, I witnessed a good number of fish probably grilse jumping at Traeth Bach, so things are bound to improve.
On the Llyfni the effect of the weather is also evident, lots of sewin showing in the Caernarfon Bay but again they remain reluctant to run the river. Fishing pressures here has been quite heavy especially during the early night hours, but catches remain low, again the majority of fish have been in the 1.8lb class.
Llyn Nantlle is really fishing well for wild browns, here again only very few sewin have been landed. On Sunday 1st August the society in conjunction with the Environment Agency held fly fishing coaching session at Nantlle the turnout again was excellent, it’s a pleasure to see so many youngsters interested, many thanks to Ken Parry of the Agency and Trevor Jones John Roberts, Harry Owen and Edwin Lewis for their hard work in organizing and running this event.
Charr fishing by traditional methods has started to produce the goods on Padarn, here settled weather generally brings good fishing.
Prospects depend on good river levels and until such time as we get a bank high spate salmon an sewin fishing will remain patchy. If we do get the usual August flood then if the fish showing themselves in the Menai Straits are anything to go by, we could see the best runs for years.
