Pysgota Seiont, Gwyrfai a LlyfniRiver
levels on all three rivers have been either bank high or over for the last six
weeks, even Welsh Water cannot impound any more at Llyn Cwellyn, it’s a truly
wonderful sight to see the Gwyrfai retaining it’s full flow over a prolonged
period, no doubt as we move further into 2007 things will change, but still we
live in hope – one way or another that all the legislation under the European
Habitats Legislation will be acted upon, after all the Gwyrfai is listed under
this directive – as a nearly dry stream bed in summer I suppose,
because that’s what being allowed to go on.
There
have been a tremendous number of salmon in the sewin, the majority of these
materialized mainly during November and December, it’s really encouraging to
see the number which have ascended the fish ladder at Nant Peris, mor so
encouraging are the redds to be seen as far upriver as Pont Gromlech, being a
short distance from the very top of the system.
The
Llyfni had very late runs of both salmon and sewin and the habitat restoration
carried out by the EA with on behalf of the Gwynedd Fisheries Objective 1 fund
is proving it’s worth with some very nice redds to be seen here during mid
December.
The
Gwyrfai however continues to be in the doldrums with very few salmon and sewin
being observed, even watchers at the falls at Betws Garmon have only sighted a
few small fish taking this obstruction, Congratulations to the relevant bodies
who are allowing this travesty to continue.
All 2006
members who wish to avail themselves to the discounted membership fee for 2007
should make sure that payment reaches our treasurer by 1st March.
Summer
of 2007 of course is avidly awaited to see the impact of the removal of the
Irish nets, our thanks to all those who were involved with this excellent piece
of work.
