How do I fish for
Charr?
Charr is a shoal fish, and once a shoal is located it's not uncommon to catch quite a few, this is why in the interest of conservation strict limits are to be observed.
During the early season however, the the main fishing effort is from the bank and by this method a single charr may be landed amongst a bag of browns. Boat fishing however is the best method, and the most pleasurable. The two boat methods are trolling by rowing or a electric engine. Successful trolling baits are Mepps Anglis or Comet in sizes 3-5. Plain silver blade or silver or gold blade with red spots.
You will need a 6-7ft. spinning rod, fixed spool reel or multiplier. 8lb test line, Wye subs. lead in various sizes to 1oz. (25gms) Anti Kink vane with attached swivel. Swivel and vane to be approx 3ft. above spinner, and lead approx. 2ft above spinner. The bait should be trolled not less than 30yds. behind the boat, with different weights being tried until the fish are located.
From mid July onwards a popular method is by jigging a bunch of maggots from an anchored boat. All you have to do is hitch your boat to the many buoys which are located at various charr marks on the lake.
