S.G. & LL. Angling Society's River report
Sorry it's late - just returned from Ireland !!
As far as the world of fisheries and fishing is concerned there is an awful lot going on at the moment, first and foremost in this area is E.U. Objective 1 debate as to whether it will actually happen, there is little doubt that it will, and therefore we have to do the preparatory work on planning to improving and developing our fisheries in order that that they benefit our rural communities, in creating employment which leads to prosperity. The fisheries review group which reported recently recommends this as one of the main avenues which should be followed.
In order that to evaluate the work being carried on in Ireland, I've recently returned from a visit to see first hand what's being going on, the assistance and hospitality shown by officers of the Central, Western and Southern Fisheries Boards, Irish Tourist Board, Fishery owners and both county council and community development projects was of the first order, and the work that's being done by them is really astounding. If we can emulate just a fraction of what is being done over here in Wales, then there is a very encouraging future for fishing generated prosperity.
The Irish Tiger economy is really forging ahead but of course on Saturday 1st April the Welsh Dragon burnt the tigers tail on Lansdowne Road.
These recommendations certainly point the way ahead and we as anglers should press the government for it's implementation with haste. For our part here we have already made our views known to the Welsh Assemblies Agriculture Dept. and M.A.F.F.
As far as the actual fishing is concerned, it's been very slow and at the time of writing its snowing heavily, the only place to be here on weather like this is on Padarn, which fishes really well by ledgering, if you can stand the cold that's it.
Both early season competitions at Dywarchen were disappointing due to the adverse weather, also another contributory factor is the work being carried out strengthen the dam at the Llwyn y Forwyn side of the lake, to facilitate this work the lake level has been dropped by over a meter, in fact as the level was dropping someone managed to remove our boat tender from the boat house, its now high and dry on the far side of the lake.
Stocking policy for Dywarchen this season will be on a fortnightly basis, the first stocking has been with browns only, with rainbows thereafter.
Fishing courses will commence mid May with the first two sessions being held at the Caernarfon Rugby Club, contact me for date and times on 01248 670 666 or e-mail huw.hughes@lineone.net.
One bit of very good news in closing, our application for assistance to purchase fishing rights on Llyn Cwellyn to the Sports Council for Wales has been successful, many this to all the support we received to make this very important acquisition.
